The University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture is a state wide campus, with faculty based on University campuses, at Research and Extension Centers and in every Arkansas county. It consists of the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) and the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service (CES), and is home to more than 1400 employees. Summary of Job Duties:

Duties include laboratory and field activities in the rice breeding program. Includes but not limited to: designing field plans, preparing field books, inputting data, data collection (both in laboratory and in field) and analysis using digital tools such as apps in mobile tablet and plant breeding database. Maintaining field and laboratory equipment, preparing seed for planting, planting crops, maintaining crops in field throughout the growing season (levee maintenance, spraying pesticides, irrigation, applying fertilizer), harvesting crops, milling rice, and data summarization. Helps maintain greenhouse and seed storage in working condition.
The employee must be able to perform physical work such as lifting a minimum weight of 50 pounds and operate an ATV, tractor with GPS, binder, thresher, planters and a combine harvester. The job also requires walking in the field, pulling weeds and rogueing for off-types in middle of summer. The individual will assist in the variety development program, selecting lines and helping maintain the purity required for all lines in the program and for seed production of new cultivars. The individual will co-author publications and assist in preparing presentations.
Occasional travel to plant, fertilize and harvest off-site location trials. He/she will supervise technicians and temporary/hourly workers.


Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s in Agriculture related field (agronomy, ag-business and farm management, environmental science, soil science, crop production, crop science, weed science or other related agriculture field) plus 3 years of related professional work experience OR a Master's in an Agriculture related field (agronomy, ag-business and farm management, environmental science, soil science, crop production, crop science, weed science or other related agriculture field).

Preferred Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree in a related field plus five years of professional work experience OR a Master's degree in a related field plus two years of professional work experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and data management. A high level of technical competence. Ability to develop and deliver presentations. Ability to exercise initiative, make sound judgements, and work independently. Ability to relate and respond to the needs of supervisors, subordinates and clientele. Ability to obtain FAA Remote Pilot Certificate to fly drone in and off- stations.
